About Equine Ulcers

  • Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) is a painful condition that involves stomach acid build up and irritation of a horse's stomach lining.
  • EGUS affects racing and performance horses in particular because of the nature of their lifestyles.
  • More than 90% of race horses1 and more than 60% of performance horses have experienced ulcers.2
  • Horses' digestive systems are made for grazing. When performance and pleasure horses can't graze, excess acid accumulates, which may result in the development of stomach ulcers.
  • The stress due to changes in routine, diet and exercise regimens that come with confinement, training, travel and competition may lead to the development of stomach ulcers.3
